Richard Corso’s 16-minute thriller ‘Fish’ excels expectations. A stylish neo-noir crime short that thrills viewers in suspense, drama and comedy. Gabe Combs stars as Tom, a gangster desperate to escape the “fish bowl” life of violence, drugs and uncertainty – but first he has to “baby-sit” his anxious replacement, Donny (Christopher Abernethy). The short film follows them during one night on the job.

Corso’s unique cinematic style is showcased without disappointment, simplistic cinematography, gritty lighting and genre-bending soundtracks provide intriguing viewing. Gabe Combs (Tom) and Christopher Abernethy (Donny) deliver exceptional performances that allow viewers to empathise and want more. Several continuous shots of dialogue and action demonstrate the artistic skill of all involved.

The thriller doesn’t shy away from criminal gestures with violent brutality and intimidating characters leading the narrative. Gabe Combs (Tom) provides intriguing dialogue as he compares the isolated job to that of a fish – trapped and unable to breathe above water. Richard Corso’s writing is on top form and his distinctive creative approach is captured to perfection. Highly recommended.
