Synopsis

A successful actress in her home country of Romania, Helene is ready to forge a path for her career in America. However, failure after failure drives Helene to ask her friend Krish for help. Helene believes a meeting with Krish’s agent, Liam, is the open door she’s been waiting for. However, when her meeting goes differently than expected, Helene has to re-examine if it’s a door she’s willing to walk through.

Directed by Benjamin Freemantle, from a screenplay by Maria Müller, ‘Where Are You from Again?’ is a short drama film that explores an immigrant’s trials and hesitancy towards becoming an actress in the United States. The film stars Maria Müller as Helene – an aspiring actress from Romania. Rohan Gurbaxani co-stars as Helene’s close friend Krish – a rising actor. Peter Tarantino completes the cast as a Liam – a talent agent. The short delves into themes of race, identity, migration and sexism. The film is partially in the Romanian language (with English subtitles).

The 13-minute film opens with the prologue; “When they don’t want you, you know where to find us. Continue dreaming and hoping, home isn’t going anywhere”. Helene, the protagonist, undertakes dialect lessons whilst applying for roles. Persistent setbacks, due to her identity and lack of a green card, result in her asking Krish to speak with his agent. Liam, the talent agent, appears sexist and dismissive – which fuels a fire in Helene to stand up and fight for her career. A call from home gives her the confidence and spirit to keep pursuing her dream.
