Awake

Synopsis

This short film is about cultivating life. My poem “Awake” intricately explores the trials and tribulations of life, as well as the importance of living life to the fullest. Time is a key component in this film. Particularly as time is the one thing that’s non-negotiable in ANY of our lives. So just like the poem, I want the film to take people on a journey that’s based on reflection, but leaves them looking forward. I wanted to create a film that allows you to be present in the moment, but impacts you enough to retrospectively ask yourself “Am I really experiencing life?” Dreams and aspirations tie the human race together, regardless of their fortunes or circumstance. Through this short film my aim was to paint a poignant picture of life. However, to truly do this I needed to explore a range of emotions and feelings whether that be love, acceptance, big dreams, wonder or the splendour of life. The sentiment of the poem is visually manifested by the thought-provoking imagery and sound design. The beautiful and thoughtful cinematography not only reflects life, but also gives us an insight into its many keyholes. It was imperative for me that the look and feel of the film was vivid, surreal but honest. I chose to execute this film using a variation of styles like live action, illustration, animation and sound design. This was because I wanted to treat this film holistically, as I believe that’s a better reflection of life, especially as its many things all at once. The inspiration for this poem came from personal experiences. So as a creator I wanted to make something that would truly resonate with people.
