Hope

Synopsis

Ace struggles with grief after the loss of his dad.

Review

2/5
A drama that explores a young mans grief.
Written and directed by Alexandra Maxwell, ‘Hope’ is a short drama film that explores a young man’s struggle with grief after the loss of his father. Ace, played by Taze Wilson, relies on the hope he will see his father again. A poignant short that takes a glimpse into the complex bereavement process.

The 2-minute drama opens with Ace seeking religious solace in his local church. His state of emotional distress is evident throughout. After a visit to the graveside, he builds enough courage to opens a letter from his late father, which just might move his life forward.

Hope Short Film
‘Hope’ is a low-budget student production that deserves appreciation for effort. The film’s compelling narrative holds up okay, but not quite strong enough to hold down engagement. Taze Wilson’s performance comes across a tad overly-sentimental, which viewers may find inauthentic. Weak characterization and a limited backstory are likely to divert audience empathy.

The film would benefit from additional scenes that showcase the characters development and progress. Cinematography, sound and editing is of an acceptable standard for an amateur production. The use of a vocal soundtrack throughout the film doesn’t play well and comes across excessive and unnecessary. Alexandra Maxwell (Filmmaker) has creative potential and we look forward to seeing her career develop.
