Untamed

Synopsis

Growing up in Saudi Arabia, Nausheen Ahmed did not see women in Acting and modeling careers. Women were not allowed to be seen in public without the presence of a husband or brother. She then moved to the US and saw how women were able to choose their paths, have bank accounts, drive and do what they wanted to do and that was her chance to spread her wings and fly, until she met a guy in college.

Review

5/5
A poignant documentary that explores suppression and female empowerment.
Directed by Phil Makini, ‘Untamed’ is a short documentary that explores the suppressed life and subsequent freedom of Suadi actress/model Nausheen Ahmed. The film delves into the challenges she has faced in her personal life, whilst holding on to her identity and aspirations. A poignant documentary that showcases themes of female empowerment, relationships, society and culture.

The 9-minute film is constructed with a series of interviews with Nausheen Ahmed. Born and raised in Saudi Arabia, where women’s liberties are restricted, Nausheen sought inspiration from a Bollywood actress to pursue her goal of becoming an actress. After immigrating to the United States, Nausheen embraced her freedom, flourishing identity and career. The film is intercut with a portfolio of her work as a model/actress. The short takes a sobering turn when she discusses the heartbreak of a relationship, where the man desired her identity to be caged once again.

Untamed Short Film
Phil Makini has created a touching documentary that examines the suppression that many women across the world are experiencing. Nausheen Ahmed is endearing to watch from start-to-finish – her courage to speak out is inspirational and commendable. This documentary will hopefully motivate like-minded women to follow their dreams and seek personal freedom. Visually, the film is beautifully shot with outstanding cinematography throughout. Sound, post-production and music are of an exceptional standard. An important documentary. Highly recommended.
