Review

4/5
A documentary that follows a NYC-based company that upcycles plastic waste.
Directed by Stephen Marino, ‘Upcycle: The Story of aNYbag’ is a short documentary that takes a snapshot of the company aNYbag – a New York based company that salvages plastic garbage around the city and upcycles them into distinct bags. The film follows company creator Alex Dabagh as he showcases the manufacturing process from start-to-finish. A thoroughly uplifting documentary that showcases themes of ingenuity, creativity, entrepreneurship and environmental protection.

The 3-minute film opens with Alex Dabagh introducing the viewer to the textile facility that upcycles the plastic waste. We learn that 95 single-use plastic bags are required to create each upcycle – accumulating in a unique patterned bag. The process is predominately hand-made by a team of dedicated textile workers. The upcycle emits zero emissions and importantly aids the clean-up of the city. A fascinating watch throughout.

Upcycle The Story of aNYbag
Stephen Marino and Alex Dabagh deserve high praise for their efforts in raising awareness to this environmental initiative. Cinematography, sound, post-production and music are of a highly professional standard – which will keep viewers engaged and fascinated from the offset. The documentary will hopefully inspire/encourage others to upcycle/recycle single-use plastic to help reverse our decaying planet. Highly recommended.
