Interview with

Paolo Iavarone

Director of

The Buzzer film

What was the inspiration behind making this short film?

I think ‘The Lighthouse’ by Robert Eggers and David Lynch’s experimental movies had a good influence on me and on the project itself.

Was there any particular challenges you had to go through to make the short film happen?

First of all, the heat! I shot the film early this September and here in Italy it’s still very hot! It wasn’t easy, really. I actually did everything (acting, directing and all the stuff). For example I went back and forth with each take to check composition, focus and stuff like that. I was going crazy! Anyway I hope I did my best, this experience has taught me a lot!

How has the short film been received?

Everyone had a personal vision for the film and this made me so happy. It also won 2 awards for a festival, and I’m so proud about that

Do you have any other projects in the pipeline?

I have a project similar to ‘The Buzzer’ but more imprinted on isolation and with a dark industrial environment and mood in general. I don’t really have too much to say about this because it’s still in an embryonic state.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to make their first short film?

I don’t really know, I still feel insecure about this. But I can say: don’t be afraid to make mistakes!
