What was the inspiration behind making this short film?
The inspiration was human matter, it was the first genetic codes, it was the tantrums of adolescence, it was the depressions of adulthood and liberation in old age. All of this mixed and compared with a living and dead nature, which challenges us and reminds us of who we belong to. Above all, we wanted to talk to the viewer, rather than alert him, we wanted to live together, play cluedo with him! (laughs). “Zéfiro” is a demand for a truth that does not exist: the cycle of life. Rather, there is a vicious circle and a bipolar narrator. What to do? Roll the dice!
Was there any particular challenges you had to go through to make the short film happen?
Many! First because our team was made up of three people, second because we did not have any funding, support and access to professional material … and even though it was so, I found it very liberating not to have to meet deadlines or please sponsorships. The journey for this film, is implicit in the filming, uncertainty reigned our path. But, on the other hand, that was one of the themes of “Zéfiro”, conquest and betrayal. However, make no mistake, writing, acting and editing at the same time is very tiring, especially due to the lack of opinions, of diversity. It takes a lot of discipline and concentration to avoid turning the project’s argument into a biographical note.
How has the short film been received?
50/50 I would say. We have incendiary looks, sceptical about some themes, while others are tremendously enthusiastic about the dynamics and subtext of the film. The percentage of likes and dislikes is never certain. Especially because our taste depends on what we are also going through, dealing with at that moment, we have many influences, we consume a lot. So, what I liked most about receiving the commentaries for ‘Zéfiro’, were the justified answers, with comparisons and full of punctuation. It is in this way that we realize, whatever the criticism, that this person really watched the film, without half measures, and that is fundamental – the hunger for the debate!
Do you have any other projects in the pipeline?
Hmmm. You don’t ask that. It is impossible not to have. We all dream at night. I recently finished the argument for a project, if it’s going to come out, I don’t know. But the manuscript is already done. And words are enough for action to happen!
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to make their first short film?
Improvise long before recording. Play. Make yourself uncomfortable and don’t settle. It is through disorder that directions are found. If you feel like it, don’t back down, don’t wait. I support a controlled impulsivity, draw your storyboards, sketch your texts, observe a lot and ask even more! Explore content, research, and as soon as you feel the diamond is ready for action, try out plans! Only those who give everything, get everything.
